We have come to the third episode already in season 2, and we get the return of Bryce Larkin, an interesting bad guy, and a heart breaking finale to the episode. Chuck’s hatred for Bryce Larkin will continue for 1. getting into his head and making him break up with Sarah and giving him an update for the Intersect.
Bryce Larkin was not the enemy, he was someone that later in season 2 have a very solid reason for doing the things he did in Stanford. A very important person both to Chuck and the Intersect program would be the cause of Bryce and Chuck forming a friendship.
Bryce and Chuck were friends, if you remember in Chuck vs the Alma Mater, Chuck and Bryce were quite close. It is interesting to see how both Bryce and Sarah, who were also partners and lovers both form a relationship with Mr. Bartowski. I will soon write an article about the original trapezoid of Chuck and its not Chuck/Sarah/Shaw and Hannah. Its really Chuck/Sarah/Jill and Bryce. Its all four of them that have significant roles in the Intersect program, but that will be discussed than. For now, we will focus on Chuck vs The Break Up.
As amazing as you are, Sarah Walker, we both know that you will never be normal
Chuck Vs Nemesis Revisited
The quote above will be broken down when we arrive to that part of the episode, but I found the quote to be suitable for what an impactful episode we have instore for you the reader. This will be one of those episodes. I won’t be discussing too much on the Buymore part of the story because the focus for this article will be on Bryce/Chuck and Sarah.
Think back to Chuck vs The Nemesis, Sarah was not quite over Bryce despite falling for Chuck, realizing that Bryce was still alive impacted her and her feelings for her current mission and for Chuck. Her eyes are scared and shocked For a woman, she has come to terms with him being dead, and her passionate moment with Chuck went by the waste side with Bryce’s presences. It almost seemed like he put her into a trance.
Chuck doesn’t understand the impact because of his own problems with Bryce. However, Chuck’s was more of a betrayal feeling. Bryce set Chuck up as a cheater and Chuck never forgave him for it. When Charah talk about the return of Bryce, Sarah was angry and bitter about it. She took her frustration out on Chuck. This is what it was like in season one for Sarah and Chuck with Larkin’s return.
Bitter, angry and even more glaring was conflicted. Well more on Sarah’s part. She was packed and ready to leave with her ex. No One Gone Love You by The Band of Horses was ideal selection for the scene because it showed Sarah Walker as human.
This is not Agent Walker in this scene, its a woman, torn between two men. She didn’t break up with Bryce. It ended abruptly because of Bryce;s commitment to being a spy. Bryce was in deep undercover and much like Sarah has become with Chuck. It was not how Bryce wanted to end things with Sarah either. However, they both had a job to do. Separate ways was inevitable. This to me is not the definition of love.
The Break Up
We fast forward to Break Up, one thing was for sure Bryce was or never will be sorry about sending the Intersect to Chuck, he did what he thought was right for the agency and protecting the program. He sent the program to Chuck because he believed in Chuck would know how to handle the program. He was right. Chuck’s brain and his ability to decipher morality with protocol was very enduring. It was what caused friction between him, the team and quite often clash with the agency.
So, we get a flash back of Chuck heading to Sarah’s room with Rose and bottle of wine in hand and a bounce to his step to the song of Fake Empire by The National. When Chuck arrived at the door, he gets a surprise and a sweet episode for Charah becomes much like the passionate kissed they shared in Hard Salami, turned into a bitter sweet moment. Bryce was smug as usual, but may be because of his unannounced appearances, but notice Sarah she was not thrilled either with the return of Bryce. She was a willing dance partner in her new found relationship. Bryce’s return for Charah was not ideal for either of them, but work had to be done.
Bryce discovered in his investigating of Fulcrum that a chip holding details on the intersect was decrypted by Von Hayes. Fulcrum paid Hayes to decrypt a stolen drive that was a refresher for the Intersect, and Hayes was going to make the exchange in Burbank. The very reason Bryce was back in town. Before TB was aware of the assignment, Chuck and Sarah thought they were going to be working together happily might i add, However, Beckman pumped the breaks on that idea, and told the team the mission’s success required a real spy. It required Bryce Larkin.
Sarah and Bryce are conversing at the Orange Orange, and what I like was Sarah’s letting Bryce know that the mission was to be strictly a cover. Sarah has moved on from Bryce and it was refreshing
Bryce and Sarah were to act as a married couple, and display PDA to distract the crowd for Chuck to flash on where the chip was. Intel said the chip was in Hayes’s vault. Chuck arrived again at Sarah’s room and Bryce lets Chuck in. While the two exchange pleasant verbalis, Sarah makes her presence felt and my oh my Yvonne fills out a dress well, but its the scene that makes it so funny and quite intriguing. As Chuck was looking at the dress, he was initially in awe of what he was seeing, but realized Bryce was watching, plus he just told him that he had not fallen for Sarah. Chuck makes a comment that I find intriguing because for the first time in Bryce’s presence Sarah lets her feelings for Chuck be noticed even in front of Larkin.
Notice Bryce afterwards, his left eye droops and we knew what he was thinking. At the party we get the hottest dance sequence of the series. The whole scene was to good to express in words, so I provide you the scene.
Great entertainment is better to be seen rather than read I say. “Where you dropped as a child from a very high spot.” and a pissed off Sarah on the dance floor was great writing, acting and even better to watch. This is what makes Chuck so special. After watching scenes like this, you often scratch your head on how creative had so many errors or bad judgment in writing and presentation, but on with the Break Up.
Chuck gets kicked out of the party because he spilled wine and dropped the bottle on the floor. A very funny exchange between Hayes and Chuck was able to let Bryce and Sarah head for the vault, meanwhile Chuck flashed on the voice of the Fulcrum agent trying to get the chip. Chuck told Casey that the chip was not in the vault but on Hayes’s key chain. Quickly Casey informed Bryce and Sarah the latest development While Bryce and Sarah go after Hayes, Chuck gets taken by the Fulcrum agent and here we go.
A statement was made by Sarah soon after, in the form of choosing to go after Chuck rather than continue on mission. Bryce was not too happy about this and protested. However, Sarah was not about to let Fulcrum kill Chuck. Not this Sarah, who clearly in this episode is showing that times have changed. Bryce had lost his allure over her. She ran after Chuck and in an quick instant catches up to them.
Sarah made the save but not without harm, the Fulcrum agent rolls a grenade in Chuck’s direction, but Walker saw it and both try to run for cover but the blast catches Sarah before she could. Sarah was left on the ground unconscious from the impact for her troubles.
At the hospital, Sarah recovered from the blast, and was happy to see Chuck came to see her. Chuck brought her favorite flowers, but as Chuck turned to put them on the table. He noticed the large arrangements and in typical Chuck fashion playing the loser. “I guess I will always finish second to Bryce.” What happened next was even better than defying Bryce on the mission. “Not Always” she said. She is all yours Mr. Bartowski, but he was too into his jealousy of Bryce to realize she has chosen him.
Meanwhile outside her room, Bryce was standing by the elevators, and was noticed by Devon and Ellie. Lucky for Chuck, Ellie didn’t see Bryce’s face. which is an error in writing. If Devon has been around for three years, than he must of seen a picture or knew of the description of what Bryce looked like no? bad writing here.
Devon told Bryce that he specialized in the heart, and saw how Sarah was with Chuck. “She is in love with Chuck, dude” Bryce took this information and went to Chuck’s apartment to voice his concerns. Bryce confronted Chuck twice about the dangers of feelings in their line of work. Those feelings that can get someone killed. Spies needed to bottle these emotions, they needed to think like the enemy, Sound familiar to the number one rule of spying? Spies don’t fall in love. Roan only said it to him a week ago, and others will say the same thing soon.
After Bryce voices his concerns about Sarah, Devon intercepted some flowers, but they were not from Bryce. They were from Von Hayes. Chuck called the number in the flowers and it was Hayes on the receiving end. Chuck was able to convince Von to return the chip, but with some provisions. Casey agreed and the meeting was going to happen at the train station. However, nothing in Chuck goes smoothly.
Chuck and Von’s comical attempt to exchange caught the eyes of some Fulcrum henchmen. Bryce and Casey were siting in the seats and went after Von and the henchmen. Chuck caught up to them an exchanged the money for the chip and made the save. Chip was in Team Bartowski’s possession.
As Bryce and Chuck were walking out of the station, we see at the hospital Fulcrum attempted to take out Sarah, but Sarah was able to recognize the doctor in her room was really a Fulcrum agent. She found out where the rest of Fulcrum was, and headed to the station. Bryce and Chuck turn the corner, as Chuck was saying how easy being a spy was, The Fulcrum agent grabbed Chuck and points a gun at his head. Bryce pulls his gun and tells the agent to let the kid go. In the corner of Bryce’s eye he can see Sarah peaking out from the corner.
This lead to Bryce again voicing his concerns to Chuck,
Bryce Larkin: We need to talk about Sarah. She had a chance to take the shot back there and she didn’t. She hesitated and almost cost us the microchip and your life.
Chuck Bartowski: I know.
Bryce Larkin: What are you gonna do about it?
Chuck Bartowski: [turns around faces Bryce] I don’t know, Bryce. You tell me. What am I supposed to do?
Bryce Larkin: You’ll do the right thing. You always do. That’s why I sent you the Intersect in the first place.
Bryce was able to get into Chuck’s head this time, and we come to quote I mentioned at the top of this article. Sarah arrived at Chuck’s apartment, She spotted Chuck was already sitting by the fountain and we know what happens. Skinny Love by Bon Iver began to play, Sarah sat beside Chuck. They share pleasantries, but reality struck.
Chuck: Look, we both know how I feel about you so I’m just going to shoot straight. Sarah, you’re the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me. You’re beautiful, you’re smart, you laugh at all of my stupid jokes and have a horrible habit of constantly saving my life. The truth is, you’re everything that I thought I ever wanted and more. And for the last few days all I could think about is our future together. About what it’s going to be like once I finally get the Intersect out of my head; we can be together for real, no fake relationships, no covers, no lies. But the more I think about it, the more I realize that you and I can never have a future together. I fooled myself into thinking that we could but the truth is: we can’t. Because even if we had a real relationship it would never really be real. I’d still never know anything about you, your real name, your home town, your first love, anything. And I want more than that. I want to be able to call you at the end of a bad day and tell you about some funny thing Morgan did and not find out I can’t but I can’t cause you’re off be somewhere in Paraguay quelling a revolution with a fork. I’m a normal guy who wants a normal life. And as amazing as you are, Sarah Walker, we both know that you will never be normal.
Sarah: You know, someday when the Intersect is out of your head and you have the life that you always wanted, you’ll forget all about me.
Chuck: I seriously doubt that.
As Sarah stands we see A sarah we haven’t seen since this scene.
By now in the story, we know that Sarah was looking for some sort of normalcy, and she knows that she is not normal because of her profession, and for Chuck to point it out, and use the lines You will never be normal Sarah Walker It was worse than she ever heard in her life. It hurts more than seeing her father carted away. This was the man she wanted to learn normalcy from, and he said she will never be normal. This is why she fights off tears not because of breaking up.
Now the situation has changed Sarah was not only a superagent we know she can be, but she was every bit the normal woman. All the training in the world can teach her how to resist truth serum, but nothing or anyone can teach how to withstand human emotions. Even Superagents can cry, especially when the person she loved hurt her. The break up has been done before, but not how it was done. Not what was said.
I have often talked about on this site what Chuck does not see. The emotions that Sarah has once Chuck walked away or was not around. However, this time we can see Chuck in the background. This is why the break up was all Bryce’s doing. Its not what Chuck wanted to do either,
Sarah and Chuck walk into the house, and while Sarah was looking at bridesmaid dresses, She glances back at Chuck and can see this was eating at him too. Chuck walked into his room and began to unwind, when he noticed the glasses Bryce had with him, and he put them on to see how they look, but what Bryce failed to let Chuck know was the glasses where an Intersect Refresher.
At first, this episode was not one of my favorites, but after understanding the meaning behind this episode and the break up scene, we can now say that Charah still has a long way to go. The story has only began and yet we feel like so much has happened. there will be more….Stay tuned we get to learn some pf the background story on Sarah Walker in Chuck vs The Cougars…..A surprising Great Role for the latest guest star of Season 2/
